Our home was recently robbed. Ahhhhh such a BUMMER of an event. All of my jewelry was stolen, and while of course the metals and stones that made it were valuable, it is really about the times and events and people that those jewelry pieces represent to me that is the real loss. After lamenting to my sweet friend Starlee Kine, we decided to do something about these blue feelings. Turn it around. Make something. Maybe feel better. "We will make a Secret Wall Safe!" said Starlee! So I started making all of my stolen treasures out of shrinky dink paper and bits of string and duct tape. My grandmother's beautiful watch she wore on a chain around her neck all of the time. The ring my parents gave me when I turned 16. The earrings my husband gave me when my daughter was born. Remaking these little totems is making me think about them and the memory they represent and the history they had and the new version insures that those memories will not be lost! I will fill a jewelry box with them and my daughter will inherit that! Starlee and a few other folks are making new versions of their lost items now too. Right now, we are posting them to an Instagram account called Secret Wall Safe. There is also a Tumblr page: www.secretwallsafe.tumblr.com. I feel better about that crummy event and excited about life and people and personal history and the positive power of making something with your hands and your heart. This is a public project. Anyone can keep items that they lost or were taken from them safe in this spot. Just send us a picture to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will so carefully and respectfully place it in a safe safe place.
